Clearance Information

Clearance will vary depending on the hinges selected. If you purchase custom doors from Swinging Cafe Doors, we build the doors according to your finished opening width and no need to worry about clearance, we calucate it for you. 

Here are some standard clearances for our most popular door designs:

Standard Hardware Clearance (double doors)

These hinges require a total clearance of 1-1/4".

Example: 36” wide door opening => Each door (assumes two doors) will be 17.375” wide. (That leaves enough clearance between the doors and for the hinges to mount)

Premium Gravity Hinges Clearance (double doors)

These hinges require a total clearance of 1-1/8".

Example: 36” wide door opening => Each door (assumes two doors) will be 17.4375” wide. (That leaves enough clearance between the doors and for the hinges to mount)

Commercial Grade Gravity Hinges (7512/s7512) Clearance (double doors) 

These hinges require a total clearance of 9/16".

Example: 36” wide door opening => Each door (assumes two doors) will be 17.71875” wide. (That leaves enough clearance between the doors and for the hinges to mount) Doors will need to have a 7/8" radius on the edge as required by the hinge. 

3" Double Action Spring Hinges (double doors)

These hinges require a total clearance of 7/8”.  If your total gap allowance is less than 7/8” then you will need to mortise the hinges.

Example:  36” wide door opening => Each door (assumes two doors) will be 17.5625” wide. (That leaves enough clearance between the doors and for the hinges to mount)

4" Double Action Spring Hinges (double doors) 

These spring loaded hinges require a total clearance of 7/8”.  If your total gap allowance is less than 7/8” then you will need to mortise the hinges.

Example: 36” wide door opening => Each door (assumes two doors) will be 17.5625” wide. (That leaves enough clearance between the doors and for the hinges to mount.)

5" Double Action Spring Hinges (double doors) 

These spring loaded hinges require a total clearance of 15/16”.  If your total gap allowance is less than 15/16” then you will need to mortise the hinges.

Example:  36” wide door opening => Each door (assumes two doors) will be 17.53125” wide. (That leaves enough clearance between the doors and for the hinges to mount)

6" Double Action Spring Hinges (double doors) 

These spring loaded hinges require a total clearance of 1-1/32”.  If your total gap allowance is less than 1-1/32” then you will need to mortise the hinges.

Example:  36” wide door opening => Each door (assumes two doors) will be 17.484375” wide. (That leaves enough clearance between the doors and for the hinges to mount)
