How to Measure Your Door Opening

Get the Perfect Fit for Your Swinging Doors

Measuring correctly is the first and most important step in ordering saloon or cafe doors that fit and function beautifully. Whether you’re installing doors in a traditional cased opening, a hallway, or replacing an existing pre-hung door, this guide will walk you through the process.

Measuring a Cased Door Opening

For openings with trim (and no existing doors), follow these steps:

  1. Measure the width of your opening at the top, middle, and bottom.

  2. Record the smallest measurement — this is the number you'll use to order.

  3. If you're replacing a pre-hung door, you can:

    • Remove the door stops (preferred), or

    • Measure between the door stops and mount your swinging doors directly to them.

Measuring a Hallway or Non-Traditional Opening

If you're installing swinging doors in a hallway or an opening without trim:

  1. Measure across the width at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening.

  2. Record the smallest measurement.

  3. If there are no studs where you plan to mount the doors, choose custom doors with trim boards.

Using trim boards eliminates the need for studs and gives you more flexibility during installation. You’ll mount the trim boards first, then attach the doors to the boards.

When ordering pre-made doors:

  • Select a door size that is equal to or smaller than your measured opening

  • Never select a door size larger than your actual measurement
